Internal Communications Review, implementation and interim leadership for ITV
Our client, ITV, is the largest commercial television network in the UK. With a team of over 4000, ITV operates a family of terrestrial and digital TV channels, delivering content across multiple platforms such as itv.com and ITV Player. It also operates an international production and distribution business, ITV Studios, which produces and sells programmes and formats in the UK and worldwide. The business is part way through a five year transformation plan which is delivering dramatically improved business performance and increasing confidence reflected in its recent on-screen rebrand.
Group HR Director Andy Doyle asked for our support in October 2012 to deliver a thorough review of internal communications in ITV including team capability. The objective: to recommend a new strategy, infrastructure and plan to help make internal communication a key enabler for ITV’s ongoing transformation.
We completed a review of current internal communication strategy, structure, capability and delivery. This included:
- Interviews with Senior Stakeholders
- Employee focus groups
- One-to-one conversations with the Internal Comms team
- Analysis of core channels and collateral
- Analysis of existing data about communications effectiveness
- Review of the existing team’s structure and capability
- Presentation of findings and recommended actions.
Following the review, ITV was keen to implement our recommendations as soon as possible. Andy asked TYL MD Jos Harrison to provide interim leadership of internal communications during the first half of 2013 with a brief to rebuild the team, and develop and launch a new suite of channels, pending the recruitment of a new Internal Communications Director.

Following this successful project, we provided further support to ITV, working with ITV Studios.
