Alice Colarusso – ITV

ITV’s Head of Internal comms Alice Colarusso answers some key questions on ITV’s IC strategy, structure and delivery.

How long have you been in the role at ITV and what was your career development into the role?

I have been at ITV for six and a half years, originally joining on a six month contract and have now been Head of Internal Communications for the last year. I’ve worked my way up, from channel management to business partnering and big change programmes. This has included ITV’s Transformation Plan – our strategy to stabilise and grow the business, overhauling our workplace technology and replacing everyone’s aging PCs with state-of-the-art macs, ITV’s rebrand and now our ambitious plans to relocate all of our London colleagues and Daytime studios for the next few years while we build a brand new office on London’s South Bank.

What’s the internal comms team structure at ITV?

There’s myself, one Internal Communications Manager and two Senior Internal Communications Executives. We’re all multi-skilled and collaborative and have built up a strong suite of channels that deliver, so we have solutions to offer our stakeholders and business partners consultatively.

What channels do you deliver including face to face?

We have a suite of regular channels including a social intranet. Our emails perform well with our weekly newsletter opened by 80% of ITV, 83% of managers use our monthly update to run their team meetings and we have an international newsletter that’s opened by 97% of our international colleagues.

Each year we hold Roadshows where the Management Board travel around our offices, give a business update, show clips and colleagues can ask any questions. 91% of colleagues said they’re clear on the strategy and that the informal, relaxed environment made it easier to speak out.

Everyone loves the Roadshows – they bring the brand to life. But they only happen once or twice a year. So we created a new theme of events focussing on different parts of the business to increase the visibility of the Management Board all year round. The senior team gets out into the business and run sessions in our biggest sites updating on latest developments. Our channels are also packed with lots of day in the life of insights so colleagues can really get their head around each business area in a creative way.

As Head of IC for one of the UK’s best known brands, what do you prioritise in your role?

Making sure my team has everything that they need to do their job and building good relationships, as this is how things get done around here.

How is Internal Communications positioned in ITV – what does the business look to you for?

We’re based in the Corporate Communications team and the function works really well here. Because of the fortunate bird’s eye view that Internal Communications has, we’re able to advise on what tends to work and what can be a challenge, when and how to go about it.

What are the main challenges for your team this year?

Our Roadshow this year is going to be broadcast to our international offices which will come with technical obstacles we’ll need to tackle. There’s a lot of exciting change at ITV. We have our first female CEO starting in January 2018, which I’m looking forward to and we’ll be moving our London colleagues in the first half of 2018 to new offices. So it’s going to be busy!
